What I Have Learnt From Mapping

The purpose of mapping

Mapping out the opening sequences has helped me understand what to include in an opening of a movie. I tried to pick three opening scenes from movies of different genres so, I can compare and contrast different types of openings. During my investigation, I was able to see the same characteristics the three openings shared and the differences between them.The differences between the three openings are due to their style as each one has an individual personality. Mapping has helped me find out the code and conventions of these individual title openings. This is because each one represents an different genre therefore I have a general understanding on what to include in my final task, If I were to choose period drama, action/mystery and romance.

Also, from this experience I have learnt that majority of Film openings will include:

• 2-3 Companies
• Title/ Production titles
• 2-3 Main cast names
• Establishes key characters and themes
• Non- diegetic music

This list has given me an general idea on what to include in my opening sequence. However, this list may vary as we might not establish the main character till the very end to create an enigma. Although mapping has helped me understand the codes and conventions on opening sequences in movies.
